Gorilla Trek – A New Type of Safari Holiday
The Mountain Gorilla is a species which has suffered heavily for a number of decades now, due both to war and strife between local human populations, and to them being hunted as a source of meat and cash. This resulted in them being added to the endangered species list, and their numbers dropping to just 620 individuals. This resulted in a demand for immediate action; a scheme for re-population in their territory, with input from the local population of humans to ensure they could live side by side. Now local communities care for the gorilla population, with some gorilla treks now available, and run by local people.

The Mountain Gorilla is a species which lives in heavily forested, mountainous regions; which makes it an exceedingly difficult animal to see by driving around in a vehicle (the way one typically goes on a safari holiday). There are, however, opportunities for an expedition to see how they live in their natural habitat, with a gorilla trek. This type of safari excursion is done by hiking through the mountainous regions of central Africa, hopefully encountering a gorilla family, which you will likely track for a few miles, and get to see the different members of the family interact with each other.
